Dr Taylor Gundry - weed management for biodiversity

As part of its quarterly seminar series, Land Covenantors Victoria recently invited Dr Taylor Gundry from Greenville Environmental to share his insights on managing over 1,000 hectares of native vegetation Offsets across Victoria. Dr Taylor Gundry - tips on which sprays to use on which weeds!

Serrated tussock:

  • Flupropanate autumn to early spring
  • Flupropante + Glyphosate in late spring to give a knockdown effect before seed set. Always add wetting agent. (Wetter 1000)

Chilean Needle Grass:

  • Always use a combination of Flupropante + Glyphosate. Aways add wetting agent. (Wetter 1000)

Spear/Artichoke/Scotch Thistles:

  • Early stage MCPA (trade name Thissoff from Weed Force (Weed Force is like the homebrand version of herbicides).
  • Late stage MCPA +Dicamba (trade name Broadsweep from Weed Force). Aways add wetting agent (Wetter 1000).
  • Also, we use Clopyralid (trade names Lontrel of Xtract). Very effective against Asteracae (Daisy) and Fabaceae (Pea) family weeds.

Galenia:

  • Open areas or a small amount under trees: Triclopyr + Picloram (trade name Gusto from Weed Force). Always add wetting and penetrating agent (Holdfast).
  • Dense patches under trees: Glyphosate with wetting and penetrating agent (Holdfast).

Paterson’s Curse/ Prairie Ground Cherry/ Fleabane:

  • Dicamba (Kamba 750) Aways add wetting agent. (Wetter 1000).

Annual weed grasses, annual rye/wild oats

  • Boom with Clodinafop.

Blackberries:

  • Triclopyr (Tade names Garlon or Trike). Unlike Gusto/Grazon this does not have the residual chemical, picloram.

Bridal Creep

  • Metsulfuron-methyl (trade name Brush off).
