Covenanted property: 75 acres, Woodleigh, West Gippsland
Interest: Restoring indigenous lowland forest through natural regeneration, direct seeding, planting and wildlife management.
Bio: Peter lives off-grid on a 75-acre property in West Gippsland, with more than half protected under a Trust for Nature conservation covenant.
Cattle were removed ten years ago, but natural regeneration and early planting efforts have been frustrated by heavy grazing from kangaroos, wallabies, and increasingly, deer. More recently, much of the remaining pasture has been cleared, ploughed and direct-seeded, with thousands of indigenous seedlings planted under deer guards. The aim is to restore former farmland to its pre-colonisation lowland forest ecosystem, while managing the covenanted and regenerated areas for weeds, pests and biodiversity.
Peter serves on local Landcare boards and is undertaking a PhD in governance. Drawing on a career spanning primary production, manufacturing, construction and resource recovery, his research explores practical, scalable approaches to changing everyday decisions and behaviour to address climate change, biodiversity loss and other challenges.
Land Covenantors Victoria acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Victoria and their deep connections to land, water and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
